INTERESTED IN WIND POWER? A controversial wind farm began operation on Mars Hill Mountain in 2006 and affords a fabulous opportunity for ecologists and social scientists to study the unanticipated impact of wind mills on rural life. A couple of turbines on the south side of the mountain can be seen from Magic Pond in the far distance while others were installed on the north side at the far end of town looming over family homesteads. Guests with an interest in the wind farming industry will find Mars Hill well worth visiting and studying for the alleged hidden agenda revolving around the "real" profit in windmills being the sale of green credits to serious polluters with no intention of cleaning up.

RENTING AN ATV or SNOWSLED...
We all know that the exhaust from these vehicles is no good. We also know that they can be used to stalk and frighten wildlife. However, Maine has one of the finest Interstate Trail Systems (ITS) in the country expressly for their use. Many backwoods trails also exist near Magic Pond with breathtaking views around every turn. (I confess, I own an ATV). Below are dealers (with whom I have no affiliation and no direct experience) who offer rentals:
ATV's and SLEDS: Sled Quarters LLC in Washburn 207-455-4700
SLEDS only: The Sled Shop in Presque Isle 207-764-2900
In both cases, you will need to either use the vehicle on trails near the rental store or arrange to have it transported to trails closer to Magic Pond (except to come up the driveway to the Guest Suites from the street, ATV's and SLEDS are not driven on Magic Pond property.)
