TRAVELING SOLO? Whether it's a cup of coffee, lunch, a walk, a world-view that you want to share, I'm usually around and delight in spending time with guests or can try to be as invisible as humanly possible if you prefer. Solo travelers are welcome here. After all, I am one of them and know what makes me comfortable when in a strange place.
DO bring your cell phone. Most have coverage here and since I fell down in snowshoes and couldn't get up and swore the coyotes were gathering for dinner (a long story) ....I NEVER go into the woods without mine. Take it to town, on day trips, to your bedroom-- wherever you are, you can always call for reassurance if you are uncomfortable for any reason, or just to report your whereabouts so SOMEbody knows where you are.
The T-MAIL (tack-mail) system invites any guest to post a note within easy view of my kitchen window saying where you went, when you left and when you expect to be home. While no place is without crime, people here do leave their unlocked cars running while they go into the grocery store.

96-YEAR OLD CLARA & NEIGHBOR HARRY
ELDER-PERFECT ESCAPE! Elders are no strangers to the hearty farming population of Aroostook County. They are highly respected, customarily independent and enjoy extensive neighborly support. 2005-2006 brought a dynamic elder from Dallas named Faye to live totally alone at Magic Pond through the entire winter! By the time she left, she had become a beloved friend of many people in the community and can attest to the kindness of strangers as she lived out her dream of a solitary, spiritually-rich retreat here. As is often the case with long-term guests, Faye left behind a personal legacy that extends far beyond the sanctuary.
The Main Cottage Guest Suite has three steps up to the porch while the Studio Cottage Guest Suite has only one. While the Main Cottage Suite offers the security of adjoining the main house, the Studio Cottage Suite has a larger bathroom with a full tub.
The terrain throughout Magic Pond is gently sloping with trails kept groomed until snowfall. For walking, they are great. For wheelchairs, they are impossible because of bumps and soft spots. The Main Cottage Guest Suite porch, however, is wheelchair-friendly once the three-step rise to Suite is negotiated. It offers wonderful views of the pond and its various winged visitors all day long.

GLBTQ COUPLES ARE WELCOME. The sanctuary offers privacy, the Guest Suites being a quarter mile off the road and the trails invite intimate strolls. There is a local Northern Lamda Nord chapter in Aroostook County, but generally little GLBTQ visibility up north and no gathering places. Among the many churches in The County, there are some voicing strong anti-GLBTQ sentiments. However, the people of Aroostook County do not reflect that sentiment in their daily interactions with one another. First, and foremost, kindness is extended (and appreciated) everywhere. In short: live and let live is the manner of the community, Maine's long history of rugged individuality mitigating oppressive preaching. At Magic Pond, it's about diversity and welcoming a variety of loving people.
